Lima, Jul 5 (EFE) .- Peru exceeded the 300,000 accumulated cases of COVID-19 and the 10,500 deaths this Sunday, the first without a permanent curfew since mid-March, when the quarantine that was terminated this week began.
The accumulated infections rose to 302,718 cases nationwide after 3,638 new infected were detected in the last day, with 17% of the almost 21,000 tests that were processed on Saturday giving a positive result.
The deceased amounted to 10,589 with confirmation of the coronavirus as the cause of death, after registering 177 deaths in the last 24 hours.
Active cases of COVID-19 fell to 98,772 after for the ninth consecutive day the daily number of recovered patients was greater than the number of new infected.
RECOVERIES INCREASE
Thus, on Saturday, 4,336 patients who successfully defeated the SARS-CoV-2 virus received the epidemiological discharge, so that they raised the number of recoveries to 193,957, which represents almost two thirds of the total number of cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the country.
Among the patients who have been discharged since Saturday there are 75 prisoners from the Cañete prison, about 200 kilometers south of Lima, out of the 77 inmates who tested positive. Only two remain isolated pending their definitive recovery.
Almost one in ten active cases is hospitalized, as there are more than 11,300 patients under medical observation, 1,227 of them connected to artificial respiration in intensive care units (ICUs).
FIRST SUNDAY WITHOUT QUARANTINE
This Sunday was the first in more than three months that most Peruvians could take to the streets, since during the quarantine, which ended on June 30 for 18 of the 25 regions, every Sunday they had a curfew and the markets and shops remained closed.
This circumstance made the activity in the streets of Lima was greater than that of last Sundays, but not superior to those of other days of the week, including those last ones where the quarantine was still in force but the street traffic was almost that of a day before the pandemic.

ASCENDING CONTAGES IN REGIONS

Likewise, to Arequipa, another of the still confined regions, the Ministry of Health transferred more than a million personal protective equipment for health workers. On Saturday, 31 mechanical ventilators arrived, among other equipment for the care of patients affected by the coronavirus.
The State also hired almost 600 doctors, nurses and nursing technicians to strengthen health centers in this southern Andean region in the coming weeks, when the highest spike in infections is expected to occur in this department.
Although since July 1 there is no longer a quarantine in a large part of the country, Peru has closed its borders and still has no scheduled reopening date.
International air transport operates at a minimum with some repatriation flights for citizens of the region and others of a charter type, such as one with Spain, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 10.
