Alberto Fernández meets with the governors to show support

Although the meeting will be “in person”, they do not rule out that some provincial leaders connect by video call

President Alberto Fernández convened this Thursday “all the governors” to a meeting to be held at the Olivos residence, with the aim of obtaining “strong support” for the renegotiation of the debt with bondholders.

This was indicated by official sources, who specified that “the President made a call for all governors, without distinction of political parties, to Olivos.”

In this framework, they detailed that the meeting would be “in person”, although they do not rule out that some provincial leaders connect by video call.

Among the leaders who confirmed their presence are Axel Kicillof (Buenos Aires), Omar Perotti (Santa Fe), Gerardo Morales (Jujuy), Omar Gutiérrez (Neuquén), Gustavo Bordet (Entre Ríos), Mariano Arcioni (Chubut) and the head of Buenos Aires government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta.

During the meeting, the head of state “is going to tell them the details of the offer that (the economy minister, Martín) Guzmán is going to present to the debt holders.”

In this sense, sources close to the President affirmed that in the national Government they are “convinced” that the debt can be negotiated, since “with so much volatility in the world, a promise to pay is not something that should be missed” .

“If tomorrow’s result is positive, in 30 or 40 days you could have an agreement with the (International Monetary) Fund, which this year would unlock 10 billion dollars,” they told the NA agency.

At the same time, they trusted that “the proposal to be made is very aggressive”, although they did not want to confirm whether it would be a reduction that could reach 60 percent, according to those who have learned about it.

On the other hand, the sources consulted ruled out that during the meeting with the governors, issues related to a gradual opening of the quarantine are discussed, given that “all the focus will be on renegotiation.”

So far, the only one who anticipated his absence is the Governor of Córdoba, Juan Schiaretti, who reported that this Thursday he will not attend the meeting because he is part of the coronavirus risk group.

“Governor Juan Schiaretti will not be able to attend the governors’ meeting called by the President of the Nation, scheduled for Thursday April 16 at the Olivos residence,” the Province of Córdoba’s government indicated.

Meanwhile, the deputy governor, Manuel Calvo, will participate in place of Schiaretti, who will join the meeting through the videoconference system.

Rodríguez Larreta remarked that he will go to the meeting “with a constructive spirit”

The head of the Buenos Aires Government, Horacio Rodríguez, remarked that he will go to the meeting with President Fernández in the Quinta de Olivos with “a constructive spirit, to collaborate” in the negotiation of the external debt.

“I always go with a constructive spirit, to collaborate, to see how we can help. I do not have the details of the proposal, but I am always there to collaborate. Argentines are all in the same boat,” said the local president.

In statements to the press at the Constitución subway station, the PRO leader noted that “work is being done well as a team” with the Nation.

The head of state will meet with all the governors in the Quinta de Olivos at 16:00 to give them details about the offer to renegotiate the debt that the Government will make to the bondholders.

As a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, some provincial leaders will be present at the Presidential Residence and others will participate in the meeting through the videoconference system.
