It is a method that helps with the disinfection of the car, reaching places that cannot be accessed with manual disinfection.
In the midst of the pandemic, and while new routes of contagion from the coronavirus continue to appear, Ford design a system that allows remove the covid-19 from the interior of vehicles through heat. In this way, se subjects the virus to a temperature that is impossible to bear, according to experts.
To investigate the effectiveness of this disinfection method, the automaker worked collaboratively with Ohio State University, in the United States, and that’s how they determined the temperature and time duration necessary to help inactivate the coronavirus.
“We analyze what is in our arsenal and how we could help. In this case, we convert the vehicle propulsion and heat control system in a virus neutralizer, “said Hau Thai-Tang, director of purchasing and product development at Ford.
How does it work
The solution is simple: undergo high temperatures inside the vehicle until the virus inside is deactivated. This system uses vehicle temperature control and powertrain, allowing it to raise passenger compartment temperatures for 15 minutes, long enough to help disinfect vehicle contact points.
Once activated, these systems automatically work together to raise passenger compartment temperatures.
The software heats the motor to a high level, and both the heat and fan settings operate at high power.

At that time it automatically monitors the interior temperatures until all the passenger compartment reaches the optimum level, then that temperature is maintained for 15 minutes.
“Our studies with Ford Motor Company indicate that exposing the coronavirus to temperatures of 56 degrees Celsius, or 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit, for 15 minutes reduces the viral concentration more than 99 percent on interior surfaces and materials used inside vehicles, “said Jeff Jahnes, a laboratory supervisor in the department of microbiology at Ohio State University.
The police will have multiple ways to monitor progress. The hazard lights and taillights will flash in a preset pattern to notify when the process started, then change to the end to indicate completion. The vehicle’s instrument cluster will also indicate progress.
Police authorities can use this process regularly to help disinfect vehicles when officers are not inside.

When used in conjunction with the disinfection guidelines approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this method helps to reach areas that may go unnoticed by the manual disinfection.
Heat has the ability to seep into cracks and hard-to-reach areas, helping to reduce the impact of human error by applying chemical disinfectants.
Ford conducted software operational tests on vehicles owned by the New York City Police Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Michigan State Police, the Massachusetts State Police, the Boardman Township Police Department in Ohio and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.
