WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House announced a ban on travel to the United States from Brazil on Sunday because of how widespread the coronavirus is in that South American country.
Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement that the ban is applicable to foreigners who have been in Brazil in the 14 days prior to requesting to travel to the United States. He noted that it is a measure by President Donald Trump “to protect our country.”
Trump has already banned the entry of people from Great Britain, other countries in Europe and China, which have been badly affected by the virus.
Brazil has reported more than 347,000 cases of the COVID-19 disease, second behind the United States in the number of infected, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.
The South American country has more than 22,000 deaths from the virus. More than 97,000 have died in the United States.
