President of Peru declares national emergency for 15 days and the closure of borders due to coronavirus


LIMA, Mar 15 (Reuters) – Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra announced the 15-day state of national emergency on Sunday with the closure of its borders in order to curb the coronavirus, the spread of which in the South American country took a sharp leap in the last hours.

In a televised message from the Government Palace, along with his cabinet of ministers and other authorities, Vizcarra also stated that during the emergency, constitutional freedoms, such as the transit of people, will be suspended.

Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Peru rose to 71 on Sunday, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
