Budapest, May 22 (EFE) .- The Prime Minister of Hungary, the ultra-nationalist Viktor Orbán, described this Friday as “dangerous” the recent sentence of the European Justice that condemned his country for keeping asylum seekers in prison conditions in called “transit zones”.
Following this ruling, the Hungarian government announced yesterday the closure of these controversial facilities on its border with Serbia and the transfer of some 300 asylum seekers to reception centers.
According to Orbán, the requirement of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) is “a dangerous measure, since it deals with the security of the entire European Union (EU)”.
“Brussels officials have been resurrected,” who want to determine who the Hungarians live with, Orbán stressed.
“We will let those we love enter the country, considering international law,” said the head of government.
He advanced that the new laws that will have to be drafted in this situation will determine that asylum seekers will be able to present their requests for protection at Hungarian embassies abroad.
The CJEU ruled on May 14 that the conditions of those who wait in the two transit areas amount to “deprivation of liberty.”
On the other hand, Orbán highlighted today his good management of the coronavirus crisis, so the Government will present to Parliament on Tuesday a proposal to end the state of emergency.
“The country successfully defended itself” against the coronavirus, Orbán said in his regular Friday interview on public radio Kossuth, adding that this special legal order “was one of the best decisions we have ever made.”
“We will return to normal parliamentary work,” said the prime minister, referring to the fact that during the state of emergency, introduced in mid-March, his cabinet was able to govern by decree regarding the fight against the coronavirus.
Hungary has so far registered some 3,200 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with some 450 deaths. EFE
