Facebook lowers quality videos in Latin America, after applying measure in Europe

SAO PAULO, Mar 24 (Reuters) – Facebook Inc will reduce the quality of video transmission on its platform and on Instagram in Latin America, replicating measures taken in Europe to alleviate network congestion in the region.

On Sunday, the world’s largest social network followed the example of Netflix, YouTube, YouTube, Amazon and Disney in response to the call from the European Union, with thousands of people working from home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“To help alleviate any possible network congestion, we will temporarily reduce bit rates for videos on Facebook and Instagram in Latin America,” said a Facebook spokesperson.

He added that the company is working with partners to manage bandwidth restrictions amid increased demand.
