Emissions scandal: Volkswagen agreed to indemnify 235,000 customers and demand fell

The German automaker Volkswagen reached an agreement to indemnify 235,000 customers affected by the diesel engine scandal, shortly before the deadline to file applications, so the class action lawsuit against the manufacturer was withdrawn, information today from the Brunswick Regional Superior Court.

Volkswagen vehicle users were represented by the German Federation of Consumer Associations (VZBV).

Volkswagen reported that starting May 5, it will begin paying compensation totaling some 750 million euros ($ 815 million) related to the exhaust gas fraud scandal.

90 percent of the more than 260,000 customers with the right to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer accepted the negotiated agreement and will each receive sums of between 1,350 and 6,250 euros, depending on the age and model of the vehicle.

Volkswagen and VZBV started negotiations at the beginning of the year in order to reach an agreement in the collective trial.

The agreement established that customers affected by the diesel engine movements scandal received compensation for the loss of value of their cars.

This commitment is only valid for those clients who chose to file for the class action. Volkswagen extends the deadline to add to the demand until April 30.
