Newgene Biotecnología, a company with Cordoba capital, started up a disposable syringe factory in Córdoba, in which it invested US$ 2.5 million. According to the company, it is the only one to manufacture this type of medical supplies in the country.

The inauguration of the plant, in the Empalme neighborhood, was attended by Governor Juan Schiaretti, who led the event together with the founding partners of the company, Tomás Echenique and Esteban Altamira; In addition, the Minister of Industry of the Province, Eduardo Accastello, was present.

Newgene Biotechnology’s plan is to substitute imports, but also to export. The idea is to produce 150,000 syringes per day and 70 million 1 ml units per year.

Initially, the Cordovan company will start with 20 workers, with the possibility of increasing the staff to 65 people in the medium term.

According to the company itself, it would be the only existing syringe factory in the country, after the closure in 2017 of a company that operated in the Buenos Aires town of Morón. This was the last of the seven plants that at some point produced this input in the country, firms that were slowly replaced by imports from Asian markets.

Present and future

“The fact that this factory is inaugurated in Córdoba clearly speaks of the capacity for work that we Cordovans have, the capacity to transform things and the industrial capacity,” Schiaretti highlighted at the event.

The development of the plant took a year, due to the work that involved conditioning the facilities to the requirements of the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (Anmat), so that in a short time the company can take on the challenge of exporting.

“In very difficult times like the ones our country is going through, where there are uncertainties everywhere, inflation does not stop and money is not enough, the fact that there is a group of pioneers from Cordoba who have invested US$ 2.5 million deserves the recognition of all, because it expresses the gene that our Córdoba has”, expressed Schiaretti.

For his part, Tomás Echenique, founding partner of Newgene Biotechnology, added that “550 million syringes are needed by Argentina annually, and 100% are imported because there is no domestic production.”

The company, which will have the support of the Industrial Promotion Law, already plans to add other syringe measures in the Toledo Industrial Park, to cover all the variants in the field of health.

In this framework, he added: “This ambitious project seeks to give autonomy so that Córdoba can contribute a large part at the national level, and to stop importing this much-required and fundamental good after the pandemic.”

essential input

Due to the Covid pandemic, syringes became a key input due to the need to intensify vaccination operations.

In the stage prior to this disease, the national State acquired between 300 and 400 million syringes annually. Various factors, including the opening of imports and the rise in tariffs, meant that national companies could not compete against suppliers from China, which in many cases sold below their cost of production.

With the pandemic, the World Health Organization identified 24 essential products to deal with the pandemic, including syringes.
